The Northern Coastal Territory: The Region Around the City of Tanzaar

Who Rules: Baron Fazio (16th Level Lawful Evil Male Human Fighter)

Who Really Rules: The Baron rules much of the city, but the Brotherhood of Tanzaar has a lot of influence on the street.

City Population: 28,000 Humans, 3,000 Dervatear, 4,700 Havanathe, 2,400 Orcs and 200 Tassarak.

Major Products: Tanzaar is located on the northern coast of the Independent State. It serves as a port of call for various traders, pirates, and adventurers. Trade of most any kind passes through Tanzaar, including Blackrock, slaves, and spice.

Armed Forces: The city guard is made up mostly of human men, with some Dervatear and Orcs. It serves also as the city-state militia and numbers almost 6,000. During times of war the Baron has been known to hire mercenaries also. During his "ascension" to the throne, the Baron hired a few tribes of Orcs and Tassarak, and in return gave them land in and around the city. Tanzaar also has a small fleet of 16 warships that patrol the sea lanes near the port city, keeping the pirates at bay.

Notable Mages

Alexander Redeyes (14th Level Neutral Evil Human Male Mage (Diviner)) is a member of the Golden Circle and chief wizard to the Baron. He gets his name from his reddish eyes, which he received in a failed attempt to enchant them with permanent True Seeing. Even without this enchantment it is said nothing escapes his notice in the city.

Incarbes (13th Level Lawful Evil Human Male Mage (Necromancer)) is a member of the Golden Circle and the secret founder of the Bloodskins, a guild of assassins tied into the much larger Assassins Guild that spans all of Western Glashia. He has asperations to become a lich someday.

Solina Fyrestarter (12th Level Lawful Evil Human Female Fighter/Mage (Enchanter)) is Incarbes' wife and partner in leading the Bloodskins. Also a member of the Golden Circle, she is well know for her fiery spells and temper.

Maximillian Bonaparte (10th Level Neutral Good Human Male Mage (Conjurer)) is an overweight professer in charge of the small but respectable library used by the Golden Circle.

Notable Temples

Falisean's Lighthouse serves as a beacon for ships along the coast. It's located on a short peninsula to the east of the Muskagon River. Over 30 feet tall, it's light can be seen several miles away. The temple itself is run by 10 priests led by Tyree Crovus (5th Level Chaotic Neutral Human Male Priest).

The Temple of Dirion is located near the center of the city and is the largest temple in Tanzaar. Close to 40 priests and 100 volunteers help the sick daily. Donations are always accepted, but some charity work is done for those in need. High Priest Palin Thomas (13th Level Lawful Good Human Male Priest) oversees the temple.

A small temple to Teakath can be found along the western bank of the Muskagon River. Gale Shupe (4th Level Neutral Good Human Female Priest) is in charge of the dozen midwives who work there. The temple is also known as an orphanage for children.

A small shrine to Fiven is located in Bor Loomis's compound on the outskirts of town. Fiven is worshipped by Loomis, and his clerics heal the gangs injured when not wanting to attract unwanted attention. Jaddo Mitz (7th Level Chaotic Neutral Havanathe Female Priest), leader and high priest of the temple, oversees the half dozen clerics who live there.

Notable Rogues and Thieves Guilds

Tanzaar is well known for its thieves; aside from various independents, there are a number of Guilds to choose from:

The Brotherhood of Tanzaar is the largest and most feared guild in the city, and not only in Tanzaar, for its reach spreads to many surrounding towns and villages as well. They deal in extortion and smuggling, and anything else that would turn a profit. Led by Bor Loomis (14th Level Neutral Evil Human Male Thief), the Brotherhood are said to number up to 2,000 in the city.

The Nighthawks are a small collection of thieves lead by Kurth Nightshadow (16th Level Chaotic Good Human Male Thief) which seek to end the grip the Brotherhood and Baron Fazio have on the city. This has made them many enemies, but they have managed to elude them so far.

The often ignored and underestimated Deathtrolls are a collection of street trash and Brotherhood rejects. Different factions exist in different areas of the city, but the word is Tarz Ironface (4th/5th Level Chaotic Evil Half-Orc Male Fighter/Thief) runs the biggest faction on the street.

The Bloodskins are an infamous assassins guild which is based in the city, although they are tied into the much larger Assassins Guild that spans all of Western Glashia. Although numbering only about a half-dozen in number, they are well known throughout the land. To keep the Brotherhood and the Baron off their backs, they usally work outside the city.

Adventurer's Quarters

The Sea Dragon Inn is popular with saliors and adventurers both. Located near the docks, it's not the safest place in the city, but the service is good enough. (average/fair)

The Golden East Casino is run by the Brotherhood, and Bor Loomis can be found there some nights conducting business. Gambling and prostitution are the big draws, while the rooms are rather lavish also. (good/expensive)

Donner's Tavern is the main hangout for visiting merchants and the occassional adventurer. Run by retired adventurer Donner Thomas (6th Level Neutral Good Human Male Fighter), it has an occassional visit by Kurth and a few of the other Nighthawks. (average/ fair)

Important Characters

S'tran Gusnak (9th Level Lawful Neutral Tassarak Male Fighter) is the tribal leader of the Tassarak population and the one who got the Baron to agree to let them live in the city. He hoped that this could bring his tribe respect and acceptance from the more advanced humans, but he's beginning to realize it might not have been such a good idea.

Important Features

The Tassarak population is located in the northeastern section of the city. Known as Lizard Town, it's mostly avoided by the other races who fear that they will be eaten. This is far from the truth, but there are rumors of rogue Tassarak attacking citizens late at night. (see local lore)

The Baron's castle lies on a large island at the mouth of the Muskagon River. It houses the Baron's family and personal guard of 50 men, all 2nd level fighters. Castle De'reno is not an impressive fortress, but its location on an island makes it diffucult to take.

Local Lore

Tanzaar has an extensive sewer system under the city streets. There are rumors of Tassarak who prowl the sewers hunting citizens. There hasen't been any evidence to support this though; it could be mistrust directed at the Tassaraks, or used by the Brotherhood to explain "disappearances."

There is an old rumor that a sea monster lurks in the bay. Popular opinion says it's a kraken or a dragon. It's usually seen by drunken sailors, that and the fact that the bay isn't all that deep leads many to believe the rumor is false.
